The state of Kansas is a combination of green plains, tall grass prairies, fossil-laden plains and the famous Flint Hills. Once the bed of a huge inland sea, Monument Rocks and Castle Rock are just two of the large chalk formations that tower over the plains. Known as a the nation’s mythical heartland, its history combines Wild West towns, Native American legacies, beauty and adventure along with American bison that can be spotted along the scenic byways.
Kansas experiences all four seasons with the majority of the state bringing in cool to cold winters and hot, humid summers. Though the state ranks 8th in both U.S. natural gas and oil production, its economy is also influence by the aerospace industry. Wichita, the largest city in the state, is a major manufacturing center for the aircraft industry. The plains and prairies allow for the state to grow more wheat than any other, which combined with corn, soybeans and cattle form the base for the agricultural economy.
Major cities in Kansas include Wichita, Overland Park, Kansas City, Topeka, Olathe, and Lawrence.
